Otto Wilhelm Madelung
Otto Wilhelm Madelung fue un cirujano alemán. Describió la lipomatosis simétrica múltiple, que también se conoce en su honor como enfermedad de Madelung y se caracteriza por depósitos de grasa alrededor del cuello y el tronco. También es recordado por sus trabajos en ortopedia, dio nombre a una deformidad que ocasiona una curvatura progresiva del antebrazo que recibe el nombre de deformidad de Madelung. Esta anomalía fue citada anteriormente por Guillaume Dupuytren en 1834, Auguste Nélaton en 1847 y Joseph-François Malgaigne en 1855, sin embargo fue Madelung el primer médico que realizó una descripción detallada de la misma. Se especializó en cirugía abdominal y fue pionero en la realización de anastomosis intestinales.
Erwin Madelung
Erwin Madelung was a German physicist. He was born in 1881 in Bonn. His father was the surgeon Otto Wilhelm Madelung. He earned a doctorate in 1905 from the University of Göttingen, specializing in crystal structure, and eventually became a professor. It was during this time he developed the Madelung constant, which characterizes the net electrostatic effects of all ions in a crystal lattice, and is used to determine the energy of one ion.
Georg Hans Madelung
Georg Hans Madelung was a German academic and aeronautical engineer. Madelung studied at several German Technical Universities before his service as a pilot in the First World War. After the war he lectured and worked in Germany and the United States, working on a number of significant aeronautical achievements. Madelung joined the Nazi Party in 1937, and during the Second World War was involved with aeronautical warfare research, including work with Wernher von Braun's rocket program. After the cessation of hostilities, Madelung resumed academic work in both Germany and the USA. Madelung's research at the Naval Medical Research Institute, Bethesda, Maryland included the effects of high acceleration on the human body. He permanently returned to live in Germany from 1954 until his death in 1972. The second son of his marriage to Elisabeth Emma née Messerschmidt is Wilferd Madelung, a noted scholar in Islamic studies.
