He was formally appointed and sworn in on 1 March 2020 shortly before becoming prominent in Malaysia's response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Wolfensohn Professor of Social Science at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton and holds a Direction of Studies in Political and Moral Anthropology at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales in Paris. He has been appointed to the Chair of Public Health at the Collège de France.
