Chevallerie retired from the Army on 31 January 1945 and was missing in action since 18 April 1945 near Kolberg.

In 1943, Mälzer was appointed the military commander of the city of Rome, subordinated to General Eberhard von Mackensen under the overall command of Field Marshal Albert Kesselring. Under his authority, Mälzer commanded not only the garrison Wehrmacht troops in Rome itself, but also indirectly the SS security forces in the city.

He placed second at the meet with a score of 8509 points and was able to set a meeting record in the Javelin Throw with a distance of 72.80m.
