Khodakovsky is a former commander of the Alpha special unit of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU). During the 2014 insurgency in Donbas, he left Ukrainian state service and became the leader of the pro-Russian "Patriotic Forces of Donbas" in Donetsk Oblast, and later the Security Minister of the Donetsk People's Republic. In May 2018 Khodakovsky relocated to Russia and in September 2018 he claimed that Russian border guards did not let him return to Donetsk.

Alexander Vasilyevich Gorbatov was a Russian and Soviet officer who served as an officer in the Imperial Russian Army during the First World War and as a Colonel-General in the Red Army during the Second World War, and was awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union. Following the war, Gorbatov served as a Soviet commandant in Soviet-occupied Germany and East Germany and ultimately retired as a four-star general at the rank of General of the Army. His acclaimed autobiography, entitled "Years off My Life" was published in 1964.

Alexander Bichkov (1953—2008),known as Russia's Rambo, was a man who lived alone in a Russian forest for nearly 20 years. Bichkov was known for stealing from and "terrorizing" locals, and burning down nearby houses. Upon his death a search of his home revealed a large amount of weaponry and other survival supplies. He was shot to death by police on 14 March 2008, following a manhunt in which two law enforcement agents were injured.
