Anthony II, Count of Ligny was a son of Count Charles I and his wife Charlotte of Estouteville. In 1530, he succeeded his father as count of Ligny and Brienne.

Henry II of Luxembourg was Lord of Ligny from 1288 to his death in 1303. He inherited the Lordship of Ligny from his father in 1288 following his death in the Battle of Worringen. Following Henry's death, his brother Waleran II succeeded him.

Charles I, Count of Ligny (1488–1530) was a son of Anthony I, Count of Ligny and his second wife, Françoise van Croÿe-Chimay. In 1519, he succeeded his father as Count of Brienne and Count of Ligny. Charles II, his great-grandson was imprisoned after buying a copy of William Byrd's Gradualia on the basis of Catholic tensions [needs editing: William Byrd was born in 1539 or 1540].
