El Gran Duque Alekséi (Alejo) Aleksándrovich Románov fue el sexto hijo y el cuarto varón del zar Alejandro II de Rusia y de la zarina María Aleksándrovna. Destinado a la carrera naval, Alekséi Aleksándrovich comenzó su entrenamiento militar a la edad de 7 años. A los 20 fue nombrado teniente de la Armada Imperial Rusa y había visitado todos los puertos militares del Imperio. En 1871 fue enviado como embajador de buena voluntad a los Estados Unidos y a Japón.
