She served as Chairperson of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) in the Pakatan Harapan (PH) administration from April 2019 to her resignation in March 2020 thanks to her appointment as the Minister of Higher Education in PN administration which replaced the PH administration, Deputy Minister of Human Resources in the BN administration under former Prime Ministers Abdullah Ahmad Badawi and Najib Razak and former Minister Subramaniam Sathasivam from March 2008 to April 2009 and Women Youth Chief of UMNO from 2004 to 2008.

He was a member of Malaysian United Indigenous Party (BERSATU) from March 2018 to his membership termination in May 2020 and member of the Homeland Fighters' Party (PEJUANG) briefly from its formation in August 2020 to his resignation from the party in November 2020.

As Acting Minister of Transport (2013–2014) he came to international prominence in March 2014, as the minister responsible for investigating the disappearance of Malaysia Airlines Flight 370.
